My role

I fulfilled the role of cretive director leading a team of 5 creatives and 10 external collaborators. I overlooked all aspects of the project such as concept creation, design development, funding, visual identity, marketing and production, among other things.

Why?

Digital technologies are becoming smarter and more efficient in capturing and diverting our attention everyday. This is motivated by financial and political gain, taking advantage of the fact that whatever we pay our attention to shapes our thoughts, behaviours, actions and ultimately our lives.

Target audience

The exhibit is aimed at young urban dwellers, aged 15-25, who rely heavily upon their mobile phones and raises questions about their increasing dependency on digital technologies.

Where?

Arts Catalyst was chosen to house the prototype as it pursues a similar line of enquiry and attracts the right target audience. Arts Catalyst is a nonprofit contemporary arts organisation that commissions and produces transdisciplinary art and research.

1

The participant must hand over their mobile phone before entry.

2

Secondly, they enter a darkened room, put headphones on and lay down on a memory foam surface. A voice recording in ASMR style (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) talks to them as if it is their phone communicating with them.

3

Thirdly, they enter a darkened room and see themselves reflected in multiple interconnected digital screens. This reflection is jarring as it shows the participant from many different angles at once, revealing viewpoints of themselves that they seldom see.

Additionally, an eerie and somewhat overwhelming echo is produced if they speak, due to the digital distortion created by the interconnected screens. The room allows for intriguing interactions with the screens and the sounds.

4

Upon exit, the participants are given back their mobile phone, which is now wrapped up in a piece of paper that serves as an informative leaflet about what they just experienced and aims to trigger self reflection and promotes conscious technology usage.

Data Strategy

AVAI - part of your familiy

AVAI is the concept for an imagined future car system that adds an emotional contact point between the passenger and the Volkswagen AI driven car. We designed this additional system to benefit the structure of family life. In order to communicate the idea we produced a series of videos showing a variety of scenarios that describe emotionally important events and common family situations. AVAI is an intelligent computer system that grows and learns with family members from the moment it is acquired. Your AVAI is designed to interact as a member of the family and is able to take on different roles and understand diverse emotional situations within your set family bounds.

Pixelator - Frame - VR Binoculars

Our design proposition consists of three elements. First, dispersed wayfinding system, frame marking the gallery location, VR binoculars installation allowing to look into the gallery when the gallery it’s closed.

Pixelator

It is a glass structure that would pixelate i.e. distort the image behind when you look through it, creating a similar effect to digital pixelation. There will be multiple Pixelators formed of glass blocks, some of which will be covered in fluorescent paint to make them glow in the dark. The Pixelators are located in strategic park locations, acting as a wayfinding system for the gallery.

Frame

It is a metal structure visible from a distance that acts as a landmark in Finsbury Park. It is visually connected to the Pixelators through the use of a bold orange color. It would also be coated with fluorescent paint in order to be visible during dark winter evenings.

VR Binoculars

It is a permanent VR installation that would serve as a virtual portal to the gallery when the gallery building is closed. The content would be continuously updated according to the show that is currently on.

Biolume

The Biolume is an immersive multi-sensory exhibit. I have harnessed the inherent interactivity of bioluminescent bacteria (photobacterium phosphoreum) and complimented the beautiful light show created by this organism with capacitive sensors that generate sound. It is powered by Arduino modules which by agitating the bacteria containing glass it triggers an ocean-like sound as well as the glow of the bacteria. I used the collective input of the public to transform adark space into a glowing, musical organism.

Additionally, we installed over fifty mirrors within the exhibit room which created an ‘infinity effect’, thus making the couple dozen containers of glowing bacteria seem like a vast and endless landscape of mysterious lights.
